Bulgaria is a country on the threshold of accession to the European Union at the beginning of 2007. At present, it is in the final period of changing its social and economic structures owing to the transformation from a centralized to a market economy and harmonization with the standards valid in the EU countries. The reviving economy has a sharp need of adapting existing or developing new efficient technologies. Unfortunately, the environmental aspects of the new processes are often underestimated at the expense of economic effectiveness. Therefore, the country needs a policy taking into account both economic and environmental aspects like in EU countries.
